Passport XYZ (aka Gitcoin Passport): Protect and Understand What Matters Most

Project Name: Passport XYZ (aka Gitcoin Passport)

Project Description:

Passport XYZ is a proof of unique humanity tool used by users and web3 ecosystems to enable trustworthy and fair participation in governance, rewards, and other community programs. Our mission is to empower individuals to quickly and easily prove that they are unique humans while providing web3 projects with robust Sybil defense mechanisms.

More about our project can be found at Passport XYZ.

Public Repository:

Our codebase is open-source and can be accessed on our GitHub repository.

Budget Breakdown

Funding Requested: 10 ETH

Description:

In support of the Octant ecosystem we built a custom “Allowlist Stamp” to ensure known good actors could easily obtain a score of 20+. We plan to use these funds to continue to enhance our sybil detection mechanisms on the growing number of Layer 2s. Any additional funds (beyond the 10 Eth) are greatly appreciated and will enable us to build out more onchain humanity proofs to support the general Ethereum ecosystem’s to bring the world onchain. Extending onchain proofs to more L2s (and further L2 support) enables us to protect web3 projects from Sybils and other bad behaviors, and ensure that those projects are fairly rewarding and engaging with genuine humans that add value to ecosystems.

Impact Measurement and Reporting

Inputs > Activities > Outputs > Outcomes > Long Term Impact

Short-term Outcomes (0-3 months):

We are continuing to build out new customization options for partners who are interested in creating branded dashboards and custom scorers based on their ecosystem’s unique requirements, as well as enabling Passport users to push their score and Stamps onchain to more networks.

Mid-term Outcomes (3-6+ months):

We willnable partners to build out other reputation-based scores and dashboards that would help them identify the highest quality users within their ecosystem that deserve to be more heavily rewarded or empowered. These reputation systems are not planned to look like existing tags or labels, but instead will be based on user, group participation of high value groups (ie, EIP developers… much like Protocol Guild’s Core Devs).

Long-term Impact (5+ years):

The Passport XYZ protocol will be completely customizable to enable partners to create a variety of different reputation and unique humanity proofs. These proofs may be scores that will help them and their users make better decisions around who should be able to access a variety of different programs, and influence how users engage with one another.

Outcomes Measurement:

We will measure the success of Passport XYZ through metrics such as the number of active users, integration partners, volume of onchain attestations created, and average number of integration partners with which an individual user engages.

Interim Reporting

Regular Updates:

We will provide quarterly updates on our progress, shared through our blog and other marketing channels. This often includes in depth analysis and insights into the details of various projects (so we are partnered with and some we are not).

Milestone Verification:

Our quarterly reports will include OKRs for the upcoming quarter, as well as report cards that score how well we accomplished the previous quarters’ goals.

Sustainability Plan

Passport XYZ plans to achieve financial sustainability through strategic partnerships, offering customizable and branded user experiences (Custom Passport Dashboards), data services, and API access to a variety of different proof of unique humanity verification methods.

We currently capture revenue from transaction fees (ie, onchain attestations that bring value to the networks and users who create them). We are also exploring a monthly subscription model for advanced features which would allow both users and projects.

We will also continue to explore grants opportunities from our lovely partners such as Octant.

Case Studies and Testimonials

Gathering Feedback:

We will gather feedback from users and partners through surveys, direct interviews, and community discussions on platforms like Discord, Twitter (x), and Telegram.

Showcasing Success:

Success stories and testimonials are highlighted in blog posts, social media, and detailed case studies published on our website and in industry reports.

Advancing Values of Freedom and Privacy

Passport XYZ is an aggregator of different verification methods, enabling users to pick and choose how they prove their unique humanity. This means that they can avoid using certain verification tools that they deem to be controversial or an invasion of privacy.

One of the guiding principles that we adopted when building Passport XYZ is that it’s privacy preserving. We don’t store any identifying information about users, and take great care in making sure that any activities on Passport XYZ won’t dox users.

Supporting Decentralization

Passport XYZ enables users to push their score and Stamp data onchain to a variety of different chains, enabling developers to access this data from the blockchain as opposed to the Passport centralized servers. We are very actively pursuing onchain use cases, and have already launched with 10 onchain partners that are utilizing Passport in a variety of different ways.

Team Information

The global Passport team is 13 people strong, and has strong leadership across all departments.

The traction and product leadership include the following:

Kyle Weiss: CEO, Co-founder of Gitcoin, and previous Managing Director of the Gitcoin Foundation.

Social Proof

Passport has built up a considerable following via our marketing channels, has produced several case studies, and has been recognized as a critical piece of web3 infrastructure by highly influential voices in the industry.
