Octant Community Round 1: Results and Insights
We’re thrilled to share the comprehensive results of our first Octant Community Round, a collaborative effort with Gitcoin to support and fund impactful projects in the ecosystem. This round focused on projects that enhance and expand the Octant ecosystem through community building and educational initiatives.
Round Overview
- Chain: Optimism
- Matching Pool: 10 ETH
- Total Raised by Crowd: Approximately 2.33 ETH (23.3% of the matching pool)
- Number of Unique Projects: 51
- Number of Unique Donors: 246
- Total Donations: 761
- Matching Cap: 10% (1 ETH)
- Round Duration: September 12, 2024, 12:00 UTC - September 26, 2024, 23:59 UTC
Funding Distribution Method: COCM
We implemented an enhanced Connection-Oriented Cluster-Matching (COCM) method to ensure fair and Sybil-resistant funding distribution for this round. COCM goes beyond traditional Quadratic Funding by quantifying the coordination levels of supporter groups based on shared social signals.
The results of using COCM have been particularly encouraging:
- Clean Round: Unlike some community rounds showing signs of Sybil attacks, this round looks remarkably clean. This gives us high confidence in the integrity of the results.
- Fair Distribution: COCM has helped us achieve a more equitable distribution of funds. While some projects might have received more under traditional QF, COCM prioritizes projects with broad, genuine community support.
- Sybil Resistance: The COCM approach significantly reduces the impact of potential collusion or artificial boosting of project support.
Visual Representation of Round Results
This visualization represents the connections between donors (light green nodes) and projects (dark green nodes). Projects clustered in the center have received donations from wallets with multiple connections, indicating broader community support. Projects on the periphery, while still valuable, have fewer interconnected supporters.
Passport Usage and Sybil Resistance
We’re pleased to report that 98.37% of addresses were scored using the Passport Model-Based Detection system, an exceptionally high rate that provides strong confidence in the authenticity of participants. Notably:
- 115 Users (46.7%) received complete matching (passport model score over 50)
- 26 Users (10.6%) received partial matching
These high verification rates significantly enhance the credibility of the round results.
Top Performing Projects
Based on the final COCM calculations, here are the top 10 projects in terms of matching funds received:
- Glo Dollar - 0.99 ETH
- growthepie.xyz - 0.89 ETH
- Pairwise: Simplifying Choices, Amplifying Voices - 0.79 ETH
- Regens Unite - Bridging Climate Solutions with Events & Media - 0.59 ETH
- Let’s GROW DAO - 0.58 ETH
- TheDevanshMehta - 0.55 ETH
- Carlos Melgar - 0.45 ETH
- Greenpill Network - 0.38 ETH
- Spark Ecosystems | Impact Evaluation Tools - 0.36 ETH
- Gravity DAO - 0.33 ETH
It’s important to note that these figures represent the final matched amounts after applying the COCM method, rounded to two decimal places for clarity. This distribution ensures a fair and Sybil-resistant allocation of the matching pool, prioritizing projects with broad and genuine community support.
Community Engagement and Round Health
The level of community participation in this round was impressive and healthy. With 246 unique donors making 761 donations across 51 projects, we saw a strong representation of the Octant ecosystem’s diversity and interests. The distribution of contributions and the interconnectedness of supporters demonstrate a robust and engaged community.
Impact and Future Outlook
This round has demonstrated the power of community-driven funding in supporting crucial Web3 infrastructure, developer tools, and community initiatives. The projects funded through this initiative are set to play a vital role in advancing the Octant ecosystem and the broader Web3 space.
We’re already looking forward to future rounds and to seeing how we can continue to improve and expand our support for innovative projects in our ecosystem.
Conclusion
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated—project creators, donors, and the entire Octant community. Your engagement and support make these initiatives successful and impactful.
The clean results of this round, bolstered by the COCM approach and high passport verification rates, give us great confidence in the fairness and integrity of the funding distribution. We believe this sets a strong foundation for future rounds and the continued growth of our ecosystem.
