Unitap: A gateway to network & communities

Project Name:

Unitap

Project Description and why it’s classified as a Public Good:

Unitap is building the smoothest experience to onboard new unique individuals into web3 & empower newbies to go from zero to one in their crypto journey.

Unitap removes the entry barrier. Instead, new UNIQUE HUMANS are rewarded for learning.

What makes Unitap a smooth onboarding experience for crypto newbies?

  • Learning by doing. New users are handheld through a learning journey with bite-sized content that takes them from zero to one with onchain challenges. All in one place.
  • Incentives. Users may get rewarded for learning about different ecosystems, dapps or protocols.
  • Sybil resistant. No reward system is safe from exploitation without Sybil-protection. Unitap uses BrightID to distribute rewards among UNIQUE individuals.
  • Free Gas drips. No more pay-to-play through painful entry points like bridges or onramps. Newbies can discover Web3 for free. They can claim gas drips from 18 different networks in Unitap’s Gas Taps, our Sybil-resistant faucets, to start learning.
  • Different reward mechanisms. Some users prefer a small reward after they do a task, while others prefer to take a chance to win a larger prize. In Unitap users can get both. Token Tap for small rewards to every user and Prize Tap with larger prizes for some lucky winners.

Quick explanation of Unitap products:

  • Gas Tap. Sybil-resistant gas faucets. New crypto users can start using new networks frictionlessly. No need to bridge or onramp.
  • Token Tap. Sybil-resistant token distribution tool based on customized criteria. Anyone who fulfills the criteria can claim any kind of token such as community tokens, NFTs, UBI tokens, and whatever else comes next.
  • Prize Tap. Sybil-resistant tool to create raffles based on customized criteria. Anyone who fulfills the criteria can participate in raffles to win larger rewards.
  • Learn Tap. Learning journeys to take new users from zero to one in web3.

Key public goods enabled by Unitap.

Unitap products are public goods that are open source & are meant to be public good composable legos. Here are the public goods that we provide:

  • Education: Learn-to-earn and learn-by-doing bite-sized content to take new crypto users from zero to one through onchain challenges.

  • Free access to web3. Anyone can get drips of gas on 18 networks (and counting) to start discovering new ecosystems.

  • Fair distribution mechanisms: Gas Tap, Token Tap & Prize Tap provide incentives & rewards fairly through BrightID Sybil-resistant technology in coins & any kind of tokens such as community tokens, NFTs, UBI tokens.

What’s Unitap’s commitment to open-source technology?

Unitap uses the GPL-3.0 license. We are committed to developing only Open Source Software. Everything that we build is available on our GitHub repositories: Unitap · GitHub

How do we advance the values of freedom and privacy?

Unitap is universally available to all people without limitation. It is a mechanism to fairly distribute gas drips, tokens & prizes to for UNIQUE humans through non-intrusive, privacy-first identity verification (BrightID).

How do we support decentralization?

  • Web3 where we are pushing the frontiers of decentralization, Unitap aims to help onboard new people easily into web3 to learn about the opportunities unlocked by decentralization.

  • Our ethos is to be multichain because we want to grow the entire ecosystem. Hence, Gas Tap already services 18 networks with many more to come.

  • Our Sybil resistant mechanism to distribute any kind of tokens prevents the exploitation & accumulation of tokens by only a few abusive actors.

  • Funding the Gas Taps is permisionless & we will also host multiple identity verification mechanisms in the following releases.

Main Project Funding Sources:

  • We have mostly bootstrapped development so far.

  • Unitap sold NFTs for premium accounts.

  • We have charged modest initial setup fees for some Gas Taps.

  • Grants & donations. ENS small grant round 9 & GG18.

Seeking project-specific funding or funding for general operations?

We would be happy to use the funds we get from Octant to build what the community considers more important.

This is how we propose to split the funds into three main projects:

  1. Fill Gas Taps (20%). Our Sybil-resistant gas faucets are a key innovation that makes onboarding into web3 frictionless. We want to have enough gas available for new crypto users. We would like the Octant community or GLM token holders to decide which Gas Tap networks to fill. 100% of these funds are distributed to users or used to facilitate those distributions.
  2. Learn Tap development (60%). Learn Tap is still under development & is the main element to take newbies from zero to one.
  3. TBD (20%). We are considering doing public good funding raffles on Prize Tap that can increase engagement in Octant. If this gets tricky then we will split this budget on the previous categories.

Project Roadmap and Milestones (only for project-specific funding):

Filling the Gas Taps.

  1. Do a community vote to decide which taps to fill.
  2. Fund the Taps.

Learn Tap development.

  1. First MVP includes an “Intro to web3” mission that helps users learn about very basic concepts such as wallet, send and receive tokens, swap, bridge and change fiat to crypto.
  2. Make sure Learn Tap can read onchain data to see if the users are doing the challenges.
  3. Connect Learn Tap with Token Tap or Prize Tap to be able to reward learning.

GM Octant Community!

I’m posting this update on behalf of Unitap.

We are back after only participating in Epoch 1. Unfortunately, that time we didn’t reached the funding threshold. We are hopping that with our new funding goal, this time it will be different.

In the last year, we have focused on building and developing partnerships. Token Tap and Prize Tap are now live and in full swing, we are helping many projects, including Octant to onboard new users through incentive programs.

We are also excited to be back with a new funding goal. We want to use the funds to develop the “Zero to One in Web3” mission. The path of least resistance to onboard to Web3, a gamified mission to Learn all web3 basics, like creating a wallet, getting free gas in Gas Tap, swapping, adding new networks, bridging, etc. The approach is to engage new users and help them learn by doing with incentives and rewards to make the onboarding journey more juicy.

Before our update a quick reminder that all Unitap Taps are public goods, free of cost.

  • Learn Tap: The Web3 university where anyone can start from zero and learn everything by actually doing Web3 activities.
  • Gas Tap: Unique humans can obtain tiny amounts of gas tokens on almost all the major EVM networks to get started on those networks.
  • Token Tap: Anyone can distribute any kind of tokens gated by the requirements they wish.
  • Prize Tap: Anyone can create raffles and gate them with the requirements they want.
  • Incentive Center: A place where anyone can set their token distribution, raffle, and learning mission in a permissionless manner.

Here are the key details of our update.

  • Total Funds Received (Previous Round): We have not received funds in Octant Epochs
  • Total Funds Requested: 6 ETH
  • Funds Spent: N/A
  • Remaining Balance: N/A
  • Previous Challenges:
    • Description: Here are some of the challenges that we faced:
      • Get adoption of Prize Tap and Token Tap.
      • Keep the Gas Taps funded.
      • Deploy Learn Tap.
    • Updates and resolution:
      • We are working with several teams and driving adoption to Prize Tap and Token Tap.
      • We have used ecosystem grants to keep Gas Taps funded.
The scope of Learn Tap has grown, and we have focused most of our resources on building new products and on the adoption of Prize Tap and Token Tap. However, Learn Tap is moving forward, and we expect to launch it in Q3 2024.
    • Lessons Learned:
      • Building it and hoping they will come is not enough. We need to promote the use of the products that we build.
      • Ecosystems are interested in Gas Tap, Token Tap and Prize Tap. For our products to gain more adoption, we need to keep working with ecosystem movers and shakers.

@Cotabe glad to have you back!! A couple questions came to mind:

  • For the upcoming “Zero to One in Web3” mission, how will you measure the effectiveness of the content and incentives in successfully onboarding new users, and what are the specific metrics you plan to track?

  • Regarding the long-term adoption of Unitap’s tools, how do you plan to sustain user engagement and ensure continuous usage of Learn Tap, Gas Tap, and other Unitap tools beyond the initial onboarding phase?

Wanted to thank you for the depth that you shared here, it helps paint a great picture. Cheers!

The answer to the first question:
I’ve been onboarding lots of people into web3 since 2017 and I’m confident that the best way is to involve people, not only to tell them about it. Also, we’re connected with web3 educators like Ornella from Bankless Academy and we share the content with them before creating the videos.
Regarding the metrics, we aim to onboard 10,000 university students.

Second question:
We’re building an incentive layer on top of EigenLayer and we will launch it with a different brand. Unitap will be used for onboarding/educational purposes.
